top 5 things my pantry needs to have
We all have personal favorites and nifty things that we like to do when it comes to cooking and being in the kitchen. Whether, it’s a food, a spice, or that special secret ingredient everyone has that something that they must have in the pantry or kitchen! These are my big 5 must haves…
- Tea! Tea bags, loose leaf tea, there must be tea and lots of it! This is my absolute favorite thing to drink in the whole great big world and I’d be lost if there wasn’t some kind of tea in the house. On average you can usually find at least three different kinds of tea in the tea cabinet. (Yes, it gets its very own cabinet here!) Currently we have, regular Lipton tea, Chamomile tea, Strong Black tea, Green tea, and a very interesting berry, fruit tea that Brian picked up to try. Three cheers for tea!
- Saltines! Saltines saved my life! Okay, that’s a little dramatic, but what else would I have eaten when I was pregnant and nothing agreed with my stomach other than a good crunchy saltine cracker? I have however switched to the new whole grain Saltines. Same crunchy goodness, little bit better for you in the health department. Besides, a stack of saltines goes great with a cup of tea before bed.
- Peanut Butter! Obvious reason number one is that Lucas the Picky would starve to death if there were no peanut butter in the house. But, it’s also great for lots of snack choices that I don’t mind giving to the kids, and I really like to put a little bit on my wheat toast. I figure it’s better than slathering it in butter or margarine. What’s funny about this is as a child I was never a big fan of peanut butter, and I still to this day don’t like peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I don’t know why. Apples and peanut butter make a good lunch alternative on Saturdays when we are rushing around and the boys want something fast to eat. Celery sticks and peanut butter (aka logs) are an old favorite that they like to have after school too. And hey, it goes good with the Saltines and tea too!
- Cinnamon! My oldest son didn’t like cinnamon when he was younger, and still doesn’t like the freshly sprinkled cinnamon. I think it’s the texture that throws him off of it. But he likes it mixed into his oatmeal and baked into his cookies! You know how a lot of times you buy a shaker full of a spice and end up throwing half of it away because it’s old and you need fresh stuff? That never, ever happens with the cinnamon in our house. Someone is always sprinkling cinnamon on something, whether it’s toast, cereal, and sometimes even fruit! It’s found its way into plenty of my soups and stews too. Let them sprinkle away, it’s good for the immune system and adds a punch of flavor without adding any sugar!
- Popcorn! What’s a good movie without a big bowl of popcorn?! Rainy day? Make some popcorn. Hungry? Make some popcorn? Starving teenager? Feed them popcorn!?! It’s just a good all around snack and if you start with the plain jane popcorn you can improvise and make any flavor you want! Cinnamon popcorn is good, toss it with a little bit of cinnamon and sugar and it’s a surprisingly sweet snack. Buttered, salted, cinnamon, cheese, ranch, seasoned, spicy, however you toss it the result is always a crunchy good snack that gets everyone gathered around to see what smells good.
There you have it, my household top 5 pantry items! Now….What’s in your pantry?

This post is cute. How about some:

Advil when your head hurts and you have cramps.
Cupcakes for when your depressed.
Vanilla extract for your french toast on a Sunday morning after a long tiring week at work.
Pretzels or chips to snack on while watching your favorite mystery movie.
A variety of juice boxes so you don’t have to wash anymore dishes then you have to.
I like your list and agree with it! I also must have oatmeal! And yes, A cute Italian would be a bonus. :-0

[...] Holy Orville Redenbacher! Maybe she’s Just Not Martha, but I want to live in her house! She only listed five things her pantry needs to have in it. I don’t have a pantry, but I have a lot of cabinet space. Tea, saltines, peanut butter, cinnamon and popcorn are must haves anywhere I’m living. I drink at least three mugs full of iced tea every day and I eat peanut butter sandwiches as snacks between meals (when I rarely get hungry like that). I am a saltine fiend when I can stock up on them. I like cinnamon toast and one can never get enough popcorn! I’m definitely with you on the tea and the cinnamon, and have a secret fondness for those whole grain saltines. Can’t do peanut butter, but I’ll sub in some good hot chunky salsa… and tortilla chips instead of the popcorn. What a fun list! But let’s stop at the pantry — I’d rather not confess to my (gooey, fat-laden, calorie-rich, decadent) must-haves for the fridge!!

[...] What got me to thinking about this topic was an article I was reading over at the Just Not Martha blog about the top 5 must-have items for her pantry. Of course, she was talking about food items. But my forte is about where you put the food in your pantry or kitchen cabinets—how to organize your pantry. You have to make room for your favorite food items! [...]

Tea is a great drink and caffeine in it will keep you fresh all the day. But make sure not to dink tea just after a meal. otherwise it will reduce available iron content in your diet.
