stop rinsing!

Your uncooked chicken that is. Feel free to continue rinsing your hair, and laundry and other things that need rinsed. You may think that when you’re washing and rinsing your uncooked chicken in the sink that you’re preventing salmonella poisoning. This is a pretty common misconception and a lot of people still do this. Stop! Rethink what you’re doing and don’t do it. The truth is when you wash your chicken in the sink instead of preventing salmonella you’re spreading it! It is now on your the chicken, on your hands, in your sink, on the faucets, and possibly even on your counter top if any of the chicken water got splashed up there. Yucky! Open the package of chicken, place the chicken directly into whatever you’ll be cooking it in, pan, dish, casserole ~ or if it requires cutting before cooking place it directly onto a plastic cutting board. (If cutting is needed plastic won’t suck up the germs like wood, and can be disinfected in the dishwasher or sink afterward, cut the chicken, put in whatever you’re cooking it in, put the cutting board in the sink or dishwasher.) Dispose of yucky chicken packaging. Wash your hands, 30 seconds, soap, get between fingers, etc. You have now successfully prevented salmonella in your kitchen, and saved yourself precious moments of prep and clean up time by skipping that silly step that really didn’t do anything for you in the first place.

Great tip! I never wash mine because I am lazy, but my mother, she swears by washing the chicken. It’s nice to be right once in a while.
