disappointed in Pur
One of the things on my “new home” shopping list was a PUR water filter for the faucet so that we won’t be buying bottled water all the time. When I first read about their new flavor cartridges I was so excited, and determined to get the new faucet mount and a box of flavor cartridges on my next trip to Sam’s Club. I even filled out the form on the website to get money saving coupons. I was clicking around hopefully, just to see what all was involved with the system. I looked over the nutrient information. I didn’t see sugar, nor did I see artificial sweetener. And I hadn’t seen it on the store shelves yet, so I used the contact form to ask about the sweetening of the flavor options.
This is where my disappointment occurs. I received the coupons in the mail, and they are great coupons! Then I received the response to my contact form. Sucralose and Acesulfame K are the sweeteners used in our PUR flavor cartridges. Off to pout in the corner I go. I guess I will be getting a regular PUR filter, because I won’t be using the artificially sweetened cartridges.
I have been on a quest for flavored waters that don’t use artificial sweeteners for a very long time now. And every time I pick up a bottle of something the label laughs in my face with it’s Splenda, NutraSweet, and other such things. Fruit juices are not artificially sweetened, fruits are not artificially sweetened, why is fruit flavored water always artificially sweetened?
Even the ones that are geared towards getting children to drink more water are packed with artificial sweetener. I don’t know if I am in the minority here or what, but I would much rather my kids have a little bit of sugar than a little bit of NutraSweet or similar sweetener product. And it’s not just water, yogurts and popsicles are also full of the artificial sweetening products. Popsicles of all things! Ack.

See, this is what I’m afraid of with getting a faucet mount filter. We used to have a Brita pitcher and I really disliked it greatly and it ended up going to Goodwill.
But, in the long run it will cheaper than bottled water, so I’m going to give the PUR filter a good try and see what happens. It will get a full review on the blog of course after I finally get one.

This was the first I have heard of flavored water cartridges.. weird… but i do agree with you that it is nearly impossible to find good flavored water that isnt artificially flavored.. have you tried vitamin water? is that artificially flavored?

Good call!
There is absolutely no reason whatsoever for sweeteners of any kind to be in those fruit flavorings, much less artificial ones, not to mention *two different types* of them!
As adults, we can choose to ingest such dubious substances ourselves, but we shouldn’t allow children to.

Catching up on comments here today. To my knowledge the LifeWater and Vitamin water is NOT artificially flavored, and my husband buys that on occasion, but it’s a little pricey for us to buy all the time.

Can you make your own version of flavored water with a recipe online?

Now there’s an interesting question. I usually just keep little bottles of lime and lemon juice in he fridge and just add a few drops for flavor. I’ll have to do some searching around for other ideas that add flavor but not sugar …
