Bento Beautiful

Okay, until this week I had never heard of a bento before. I know a few of our readers are from Japan, and a few of our American readers have spent time in Japan as well, so maybe you folks could help enlighten me on these fascinating little lunch creations. I’m not even 100% sure I understand the little buggers, but I find myself wanting to order a couple bento box sets from BentoYum. What a fun way to pack your lunch for work or school. I sort of almost do this when Dylan packs his lunch, he really doesn’t like sandwiches so I always mix up a bunch of little things for him in containers. So, I know he would use a bento for school. Not so sure about the other boys using them or not…although they do get school lunches 98% of the time anyhow, so I’m not packing very often.

bento with meatloaf and car shapesNow, from what I can tell from the handful of bento sites I’ve looked at this weekend and this morning bento’s are supposed to be fun and creative little lunches that are designed to put some variety in your lunchtime. BentoYum had some awesome pictures of meals they packed up too, look at this one with the cute little car shaped cheese. Who knew leftover meatloaf and green beans could be that fun?

So, who uses fun bento accessories already? And who wants to now that they looked at all the cute lunches?

Hey, thanks for the kind words on the site. Glad you liked the spudmobiles. ;) I thought they were kind of fun.

May be doing fish shaped mashed potatoes tomorrow (though some how…that seems…well…wrong.)

Bento really does make lunch more fun…but remember, it’s a mindset, not really so much a system that requires specific tools. You can buy yourself some lock n lock boxes at Walmart or Meijer and some party picks or small cookie cutters and go to town. The accessories are fun, but they aren’t necessary.

That said, I’m addicted to the boxes now. At last count, I had three matching sets and about six other single boxes, plus some assorted lock n lock. The different shapes lend themselves well to different fillings. :)

Hey Jennifer, thanks for stopping by! I might have to grab a few containers at the store next time we’re out shopping just to give it a try for hubby. He’s been taking boring PB&J sandwiches and I really want to encourage him to stay away from the little store that’s right next to his office where he picks up all sorts of junk food that he shouldn’t be eating.

All the cute accessories do look a bit addictive I must agree!

Mr.Bento Lunch Jar ~ cool! and very gender neutral product for those that are looking for something not so girly feeling.

I first read this entry yesterday… I’m very intrigued by this bento thing… was looking at the Bento Yum site. Looks a bit overwhelming to me, but very interesting. Especially since I buy my lunch and invariably end up choosing something bad for me, or adding something bad before lunch is over. If I had a Bento, I’d have a nice healthy(er) lunch, and no money with which to buy cookies and ice cream bars

Exactly :) naughty ice cream bars and cookies! (and skittles, Brian buys skittles at the little store all the time tsk tsk) Now, if my grocery budget were bigger I’d like to make some of those yummy looking wraps and things. They all look so good. My budget is pennies right now, so I can’t go adding a bunch of stuff all at once so it has to be a little at a time. Stupid budget.

[...] I have a strange new obsession. And it’s called Bento. It all started with Loretta making a post about Bentos on Just Not Martha. I followed her link over to Bento Yum just to try and figure out what the heck a Bento was, and a [...]
