my first bento attempt
Okay, so all this talk about bentos and looking at cool bento pictures has inspired us all to take a look at what’s for lunch and try to pack a more interesting lunch and get into the whole bento movement. Right? Of course it has. So, we had some leftovers the other night and Brian had gone to bed early not feeling well. I figured I’d be nice and pack him up a lunch so he had one less things to worry about in the morning. See, I can be nice! So, here we go my first attempt at a bento-ish lunch. It’s pretty simple and not the best lunch in the world, hot dogs, turkey burger, pickles, and cheese. Added some ketchup packets to divide and for dipping.
It’s not truly bento, as it’s not 100% waste free, the pickles and cheese are resting in a cupcake cup paper, and I tossed in some ketchup packets. Those items end up in the trash obviously, but it’s still minimalist trash. I used a Rubbermaid Take Along, the disposable/reusable containers that you get for a couple bucks per set of three. This is what Brian already takes his lunch in, so it wasn’t anything additional. He’s been using these for awhile now, because that way if he forgets it or it magically disappears at work it’s not a big deal. That and we lack containers in my cabinets as it is already I don’t want the ones we do have getting lost!
I am thinking of getting him a bento set since he’s been enjoying taking his lunch and he did compliment me on the great lunch idea I had when he got home the other day. LOL If only he knew how many bento sets and photos I’ve been eying the past couple weeks. Of course he thinks I’m a genius and thought of it all by myself and made him a wonderful lunch of leftovers, so that’s okay with me!
On a side note, Jenn, who has become bento obsessed as well, just pointed out to me that there is a gorgeous new bento set available at BentoYum! The Natural Leaf bento set is pretty without being froo-frooey, and green is my favorite color. Check it out, you might get inspired

I used to love buying bento lunch when we lived in Hawaii. Had never thought of making my own. Thanks for the great photo and idea!

I was just at Bento Yum and it was the first I had heard of Bento Boxes… I guess someone is telling me something. It looks like something I really want to try. BTW- be careful with the Kava, I tried it out about 15 years ago, it was popular stuff at the co op in Montana where I was staying and I didn’t find it agreeable with my stomach or head.
