stop grinding your teeth, please

Not something many people think about unless they or someone in their house actually does this in their sleep. Noah grinds his teeth, and he has done it ever since they came in! Drives me nuts, and it’s not good for them at all of course. When he was just a toddler he slipped, fell, and chipped one of his front teeth. It broke into a jagged point and we had to go to an emergency dentist visit to get the tooth filed right away so he wouldn’t bite his tounge, and before he went to sleep in case he started to grind because it would do more damage than usual. Because of that tooth not being lined up with his other teeth it’s always worn away on an angle and very quickly, I am in fact patiently waiting on what’s left of it to fall out! It’s loose thank goodness because there’s barely any tooth left at all.

Because he’s still little they never put a mouth guard on him. And aside from his front two teeth (where the chip occurred) he hasn’t had any problems with the teeth wearing away in places. This year he gets the dental sealant put on his back teeth to protect against cavities, oops too late he’s already got one. And now that permanent teeth are finally coming in the dentist has mentioned getting a night guard for him to wear to bed. He doesn’t grind every single night though, so it’s kind of up in the air. We might trial something like Night Guard treatment for TMJ and see how things go. Obviously another concern would be that he’s not going to leave the night guard in his mouth. If you were 8 years old and you had to sleep with some weird thing in your mouth, what would you do when you woke up? You’d take it out and stuff it under your pillow like any other kid of course.

The dental industry will be making a small fortune off me shorty, I need dental work done still and have been avoiding it. It looks like Dylan is going to need a retainer and maybe some braces … if the rest of those baby teeth would get moving we might be able to decide. I wish the dentist’s office was open on the weekend. That would at least make life easier.

I commiserate. We had one in braces and a pallet expander, $4,500! The other one looked like he was going to need them, but lo and behold, his teeth fixed themselves. You might see those teeth in any number of photos on my site.
So don’t be surprised if you don’t end up needing them.
