some kind of holiday…

So, in celebration on winter I was burning my bayberry candle. You’re supposed to burn it all the way to the socket. Brian and I wrapped presents and watched TV for awhile and I went upstairs to get ready for bed. A loud POP, definitely something breaking. Thinking it was the cat knocking something down Brian went to look in the kitchen. Nothing fallen or out of place there. Through the dining room and back into the living room, when he sees it. The bayberry soy candle I was burning on the dining room table exploded and split the thick glass block candle holder in half! I wish I had taken picture of the two halves of glass before they got tossed out. Thank goodness no one was in the room when it happened, that could have been dangerous. It was in one of ice cube votives from Partylite Candles. These things are heavy glass, like half an inch thick, and it blew it right in half. My favorite votive holders too, well at least I still have one that’s not broken.

They say that the bayberry burning ritual will bring luck, I’m afraid that exploding candles and broken glass might mean bad luck. Eek!

So, originally Christmas dinner was going to be for 19 people, Brian & I, our four boys, his brothers, their wives, and then 5 more kids, Brian’s mom and dad, my mom and stepdad. My mom and stepdad decided to go home early worried that their younger dog would snip at someone with so many people in the house. Brian’s oldest brother didn’t come and they are actually moving this week to a new house in a different state an well that’s a long story. About an hour before dinner I get an email from Brian’s mom that they’re not coming. His dad was sick, possibly food poisoning.

That left us with just us, 4 adults and 7 kids total …. a 20 pound turkey, a huge ham, lots of veggies, 2 pies, an awesome pineapple and creme dessert, a lot of salad, and a lot of soda, tea, and egg nog. Holy crap. Ton of freaking food.

Did I mention that Dylan (our 10 yr old) woke up with an excruciating migraine this morning. One that brought him to tears and had him so nauseated he actually threw up twice. Never thought I’d actually be grateful for my migraine experiences. I was able to help him and get him feeling better. His brothers were so sweet, they refused to open anything until Dylan was feeling well enough to join them. They waiting patiently until almost 10:00 when he came down and managed to stomach some tea.

Presents were opened, joy was had etc etc … I took pictures but I’m not sure where my transfer wire is at the moment so you’ll have to see those another day!

Even with all the oddities, and the exploding candle, it was a good day. I think we spent a good 45 minutes playing with the kids and their new Nerf air guns. And probably another hour or two or three playing their new games and hanging out. It’s been great, relaxing, and lounging out. Hopefully the rest of the week is just as stress free.

Aww, that’s sweet that your kids waited for their brother! The rest of the stuff is just weird… was it a partylite candle? I’ve never heard of that happening before. Almost all of the glass partylite stuff is pretty heavy duty stuff!

They have their moments of brotherly love! They even took him an extra pillow, and a bucket, and a glass of water! Waiting was their idea even, not mine.

  3. Lisa Marie Mary Says:

Aw, poor Dylan! But what sweet brothers! I love it when kids come through like that for their siblings! And you know they really do love each other, just living together is hard - for anyone, really. Crazy candle - that’s nuts! I’m so glad no one was in the room! (Well, it would’ve been cool if someone had been in there filming it! Ha!)

What an awesome thing for the two brothers to do. That is awful to have migraines at such a young age. Those candles are dangerous! We replaced carpet for a couple who had a candle with coffee beans in it. The beans exploded and caught their carpet and furniture on fire.

  5. Kim Says:

That is so…sweet that the boys wanted to wait. My two younger ones do the same thing.

    Happy new year!!

  6. Deb Says:

That’s some crazy stuff with it exploding like that…that’s scary. Is it that it was burning too hot?? weird..

sorry your sweetie had to deal with a migraine…and so young :(

It was a soy candle supposed to be cool burning and all that jazz. The only other thing I can think of it that maybe it had an air pocket in it or some crazy thing.
