teaching your kids to cook
One of my teenage nephews has been staying with us over winter break. I was kind of surprised to find out that he doesn’t really know how to cook anything. He wasn’t even sure how to heat up some CheezWhiz for nachos tonight. Knowing how hungry teenage boys can get I thought it was actually odd -lol-
My kids are always helping in the kitchen and doing things with us when it comes to cooking. My 10 year old can prepare a meal if he wants to. It might be a simple meal, but it would still be a meal. He even made me a grilled cheese and soup when I was sick in bed. All by himself, and did the dishes too!
Do you actively teach your kids to cook? Is it something you talk about with them? I think a lot of learning to cook and prepare food just happens on it’s own really from watching and trying different things out. I’m not really sure how one gets to be 16 years old and unable to microwave some cheese or unable to grill a sandwich on the stove. I’m baffled at the whole thing.

I make sure my son knows how to make something basic. As he gets older, or if he shows an interest I’ll show him more. I’ve also taught him how to wash clothes so if the need arises, he won’t be perplexed or cause the house to be overloaded with soap bubbles!

ROFL I can totally see that happening to Michael if he did laundry. Instead of cooking something he will just get peanut butter on bread …. or mayo & tomato slices on bread. Dylan offered to show him how to make grilled sandwiches. I was baffled at the whole thing. At 16 I basically made my own meals a lot of the time, I baked all the time, and I would cook for anyone that was hungry!
