Today is National Pie Day
Over the years, pie has evolved to become what it is today “the most traditional American dessert”. Pie has become so much a part of American culture throughout the years, that we now commonly use the term “as American as apple pie”.

No, I am not making that up ~ it’s a real day … and it just happens to be today. So, I’m going to make a pie … I think just apple. I’ll have to see what looks good when I get to the store this afternoon.
Look, there’s even a website about the day ~ http://www.piecouncil.org/national.htm
Created by the American Pie Council, National Pie Day is dedicated to the celebration of pie. As part of our American heritage, this day is a perfect opportunity to pass on the love and enjoyment of pie eating and pie making to future generations.
Apple Pie:
1/3 to 2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
8 medium sized apples (a medium apple = about 1 cup)
2 tablespoons margarine
Heat oven to 425 degrees. Peel, core and slice the apples. Try to keep the size of the slices even. Mix sugar, flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, and salt in large bowl. Stir in apples. Pour into pastry-lined pie plate. Dot with margarine. Cover with top crust and seal the edges. Cut slits in the top. Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until crust is brown and juice begins to bubble through slits in crust.

Just a tip — squeeze a little lemon juice over the apples after you slice them to give them a little tartness and keep them from turning brown!
