Children of Men ~ Movie of the Week

movie of the week

children of men dvdThis week’s movie is a bit of an odd movie. I picked it up off the On Demand listing for Cinemax. Based on the book by P.D. James this story tells us what might just happen in a future where the whole world has become infertile. Children of Men ~ Starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore.

We start off with the news that the world’s youngest person has just been stabbed to death for refusing to sign an autograph, he was just a little over the age of 18. Can you imagine the youngest person on the planet being 18 years old… there were people alive that had never even seen an actual baby.

To add to the world’s grief of becoming infertile there was also flu epidemic in which many died, including children. All this death and uncertainty seems to have sent the whole world into a hostile annoyed state of mind. Everyone seems angry, everything is dirty, the world is not a pretty place.

There is hope. A ship called “Tomorrow” and something called the “Human Project” are seeking to recreate life and make things better again. Then …. a pregnant woman emerges into the story. The first baby to be born in over 18 years! An amazing story, the woman herself had never even seen a pregnant woman and here she is about to have a baby. But political activists groups want her child for their own purposes and she must be kept safe and secret from them and the government and everyone other reward seeking person on the planet… aka everyone alive.

The movie starts off a bit slow, but doesn’t take too long to pick up. There are some tidbits that would be nice to have earlier than what they give them to you. It also goes into a point where the camera angles are more documentary like … meaning look a guy following Clive Owen around with a camera and Clive Owen acting like he’s not there….. at one point there’s even blood droplets all over the camera lens and they are there for a long time, then suddenly like magic the lens is clean again. Trust me, it’s noticeable.

On my movie rating scale this movie gets 3 out of 5 stars. Good points were that the story was the kind that makes you wonder and think, could this happen…. makes your brain work. I didn’t fall asleep, but I didn’t feel glued to the movie either.
