and the sirens came blaring

Lucas and Ethan were finishing up homework a little while ago. Dylan and Noah had finished their chores and homework and were outside playing with their friends already. I was sitting here working cleaning out my email inbox. Suddenly a two firetrucks and an ambulance come blaring into the community.

I knew the kids were in the “loop” with their skateboards. The loop is the big round turnaround at the back of the community since there is no connecting road back there, just a fence and railroad tracks. I slid my shoes on and grabbed my jacket on the way out the door just knowing something wasn’t right and that I’d find my children wherever those firetrucks just went.

I was right. Not because they needed the firetruck or the ambulance but, because they CALLED the firetruck and ambulance! Dylan, Noah and a few of their friends smelled fire and saw smoke coming out of one the townhouses near the loop. The knocked on the door and determined no one was there and one of the kids used their cellphone to call and report the fire. When I got the loop there were about 10 kids, maintenance staff, and several fireman standing outside the door of the home with the smoking kitchen. It turns out someone left the stove on with an empty pot on it and then went out…. whoops.

Your son and his friends did a great job!

Many kids wouldn’t actually call 911.

  2. alli Says:

Wow! What a story. And no one was home? That’s fortunate. Good for those kids to pay attention.

Good for them — and ditto to the dispatcher who didn’t automatically assume kids calling 911 were making a prank call. Hopefully, nobody was hurt!
