okay and the bad news is ….

Well, actually I’m trying not to think about it as bad news. At first, I was devastated and heart broken and felt like I was being kicked while I’m down. Now that I’ve had a few hours to calm and compose myself, shed a few tears of frustration, and get it all out of my system I am thinking of it in the most positive ways I can come up with.

Where shall I begin? Let’s begin at less than two weeks ago when the notice came in the mail that our lease renewal was ready and we could come to the office and sign the prepared paperwork anytime between now and June 1st. Our lease ends on June 30th.

Then today we receive a notice that our lease will not be renewed. That’s right, less than two weeks and they changed their minds.

Nothing has happened in that two weeks, no notices on my door or in my mail box. No phone calls. Nothing unusual. I pay my rent a week early every month, have never been late or tried to cause problems.

I didn’t even send a letter of complaint when the maintenance man was rude to me in December, which I should have done. I don’t complain to the office when people park in our assigned parking spot. I don’t complain when the lady that works in the office on weekdays sticks her nose in the air and gives me a dirty look every morning while I stand at the bus stop with my kids. I just want to leave in my house in peace and quiet and not have drama.

We have to be moved out by June 30th. That gives me about two months to find something, come up with money for deposit and first month rent, plus moving expenses, truck etc….

At first I was hurt and I took it personally. They don’t have to give me a reason. They’re not evicting me, they’re just not renewing my lease. According to the state of Virginia they do not need a reason to do that. They really don’t even need a reason to evict me, they can give a general reason and be done with that. Virginia rental rights are awful and non-existant.

Now, we’re looking at it as …. if we move I won’t get those dirty looks every morning. I won’t get treated rudely by the maintenance man. I won’t get a “lease violation” because I put the mop on the porch to dry for an hour. We can find a house with a private owner that is renting and get a much less stressful situation and maybe even our own yard. How nice could that be? There are positives.

Is it going to be tough to do in short period of time? Yes, probably. Can we do it? Yes, I believe we can. Just have to have faith and persistence. I will not let this get me down. I refuse to be kicked. I refuse to be forced to feel like total crap when I’ve done nothing wrong.

Maybe my bad news is really good news in disguise.

I truly believe that in every bad situation there is a positive…it’s just a matter of being calm and rational enough to find that positive. And it looks like you’ve already done that.

I’m sorry you are going through this, it stinks but like you’ve already pointed out - look at the positives of having to move out of there and into a different place!

I wish you the best of luck and keep your head up :-)

Definitely a good thing… you won’t have to be afraid to breathe when you step out the door of your house!

I’m so sorry they are springing this on you like this! I’m really glad, though, that you won’t have to be dealing with their lame butts anymore!!! They have no idea what they’re losing in the way of a nice family, good renters! They’ll probably get some ‘bustin holes in the wall, loud, double-parking, late-paying’ people in there after you - and then they’ll realize how dumb they were!!!

Sometimes that positive is hard to find! But darnit I know it’s in there!
Thank you everyone, your kind comments mean a lot to me. More than you’ll ever know.

I know you’ve been dissatisfied with your idiot landlord, so yes, there are positives here, even if Doofus handled it so poorly. And the housing market bust should mean you can find a reasonable place. It’s just so soon! And you guys can’t even live in the van right now!

Don’t panic, Retta. Things will work out. Otherwise, Marisa and I will come down there and help you kick some serious butt! (Love you!)
