Growing lettuce in the Hydro Greenhouse
This was one of Dylan’s birthday gifts. He’s always liked to grow things and back in Pennsylvania he had his own little tomato plants to take care of. I wasn’t allowed to touch them, I’ve got the black thumb curse. So, when we got the chance to review the the Discovery Channel Store Hydro Greenhouse, I knew he would love it. Which he does, I know it’s hard to tell from the picture, but at age 11 apparently smiling for birthday pictures is no longer “cool.”
As soon as everyone was gone and the dishes were done he was setting up his greenhouse and asked me to go out and buy him seeds…. at 9:30 at night I was supposed to magically produce seeds to plant. I told him he was going to have to wait until the weekend.
I did pick him up some seeds for a leafy salad variety and some for grape tomatoes. I wasn’t sure what he’d want to plant in his greenhouse. After reading through the book and taking in consideration the height of the Greenhouse, he decided on the leafy salad variety and was looking forward to putting together some of his own salad!
After just a few days we started seeing little sprouts growing in the Greenhouse. And they continued to grow for awhile. Recently I think we must have done something incorrectly. Or maybe I looked at it too long and my black thumb curse took over. The plants have all shriveled away now. It was going so productively and they were looking really good, then very suddenly it all went in reverse really fast. Maybe he planted too many seeds, or overdid something, or underdid something.
Dylan is a little bummed out, but we’re going to try again. Not sure what he’ll want to plant in there the next time. A special thanks to Parent Bloggers for the opportunity to try out this great product. We’ve had a lot of fun even though we weren’t 100% successful. We’re getting ready to move and already Dylan is planning on planting tomatoes and cucumbers and all sorts of things in the new yard.

Those are super cool. My sister has one and she loves it. We’ve used it for basil and bay leaf.
