Day one of summer vacation…

Yesterday was the last day of school for my kids. I’ve got a lengthy post in the works about all their awards and grades and whatnot… but today is about the first day of summer.

Dylan has spent most of the day today working on a beat up, neglected, abused bicycle that a neighbor gave him a few weeks ago. He fixed it at first and he’s been riding it all this time. Well, it gave up today and needed more work. He’s trying really hard to get it up to par and just having very little luck. I wish our stimulus check had come today …. I would scoop him up and go to Target and just buy him a shiny new bike!

He’s really been putting his heart into this beat up old bike, and he’s never ever asked me for a bike … and he did so great in school this year. I think he deserves a decent bike. Maybe that check will be in tomorrow’s mail and I can surprise him with a new bike for the summer.

Lucas …. well, Lucas is not a go outside and run every chance he gets kind of kid. Lucas is more of a I’m going to sit in this recliner, watch cartoons, play video games, and read comic books kind of a kid. He’s spent most of the day in the recliner with his new comic books just relaxing.

Noah has been puttering around going through the toy box deciding what should go to the new house and what should go to GoodWill or Freecycle… He’s more interested in moving than anything else.

Ethan has spent his day snuggling the cat and eating all the food in the house. Okay, maybe not all the food, but seriously I often forget what it’s like to have the boys home all day. My poor refrigerator doors.

It has been an interesting day to say the least. Lots of family stuff going on … non-blog appropriate stuff that is. All on the first day of summer break. I’ve gotten next to nothing done so far today, I’m distracted and fuzzy headed. Is it bedtime yet? Everyone go to bed so I can work in peace and quiet already.

It’s good that the old bike is getting some love! I really want a bike, but we just got a new dog who will probably just trip over the wheels. :)

Wow, it sounds like the kids are off to a running summer start! At least there is tinkering, reading, organizing, and, well….eating….going on. Three out of four isn’t bad! ;)

Ok, is it me or does anyone send their kid to summer camp? Can we do that anymore in this day and age?

Your post reminded me of my childhood years.. . Oh, how I miss being a kid :)

Let Dylan work on that bike for a little while longer before you surprise him with a new one. Fixing stuff up for boys his age (and, well, boys of all ages) is one of the most rewarding past times that a kid can have. It can provide many useful skills — ones that are far more practical than half the stuff he learned at school this year — and a lifetime of good memories.

I remember working on all sorts of projects as a kid. Most of them never came to fruition — they required spending money that I didn’t have — but they taught me a lot of things, like respect for hard work and persistence.

I hope you and your boys enjoy an excellent summer. Just think, before you know it, they’ll be 6-inches taller and absent from your life again for most of the day.

I agree that you should let Dylan work on the bike a while longer. I was a bookworm, too. It’s good to get all the kids outdoors, though.
