I was recently doing some research because the kids and I would like to volunteer to do some work with SPCA and help some cuddly furries find new homes and get taken care of. In the course of my research and reading I learned two things. Sadly the first one was that none of my boys are old enough to volunteer. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old. (Ages 13-15 must be accompanied by a parent, 16 year olds can volunteer on their own if they wish.)
I was pleased to see that my local SPCA has a blog, so of course I clicked through to check that out! They blog about what’s going on and the cute cuddlies that come through the shelter looking for homes.
The entry that caught my eye and brought me here to point out to you was the post about the P.A.W.S. program. We live in a laregely military area, and Pairing Animals with Soldiers is a program they came up with the help soldiers and animals connect.
If you or someone you know is in the military you probably already know that having a pet can be quite difficult when you are being called away often. That’s why many soldiers choose not to have pets, they wouldn’t be able to give them the attention they need and deserve, especially if that soldier is living alone.
P.A.W.S., Pairing Animals With Soldiers, is a program developed by the Peninsula SPCA to allow soldiers to take dogs from the shelter for the day. This is not an over night trip but this gives soldiers a chance to reconnect with the animals they love while giving the dogs a chance to get out for the day. The dogs can wear their adoptable dog vest so they can get more exposure and hopefully more potential adopters will see them. This program benefits both the dogs and the soldiers. The soldiers can even become volunteers if they are interested in helping the animals more. If you are interested in participating in the program check out the Peninsula SPCA for more information.

What a wonderful program! Our family is a big fan of animal shelters. We just adopted our second rescue dog so we know what a joy it is to bring a new four legged friend into our lives.
What a great idea. I never cease to be amazed at the good ideas people come up with, and this is one of the best I’ve seen in a while. Animals in shelters are a sad thing, but at least they’re safe, warm and fed. The thing they need after that is love, lots of it, just like the rest of us.
Volunteering for your local shelter is one of the most rewarding things you can do. It’s so tough to leave all the animals at the end of the day. I just try and tell myself to make a positive difference for the ones I can since I’m not able to help them all.
